winter & woe

a collaborative visual poetry album

about winter & woe

The same experience, feeling, or scene can be captured in infinitely many ways. Our five senses all open to the same world, and art plays with these perceptions to deliver experiences. This new media project is an experiment in mixing the senses and opening new possibilities, combining the senses through artistic exploration. By giving a poem to an instrumentalist and a filmmaker and asking each to evoke the poem through their own medium — independently — we will arrive at a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The poem will find new life and fresh voice through song and moving image, and when all are experienced together, the spectator will be opened to new horizons of artistic being. We welcome you to join us, taking one form of art to enliven another, as we explore new perceptual worlds together.

This set of evocations were created by randomly and separately assigning poem recordings to musicians and filmmakers. Using their skillset, each artist crafted their artistic response to the poem recording and submitted it without ever seeing the words or what the other artist was working on. What results is a series of evocations combined into a collaborative, visual poetry album. Users can utilize the sliders to customize their experience: turn up or down the opacity of the film, turn up or down the volume of the poetry itself or the music, or even to randomize the evocation, thus creating a unique artistic experience.

welcome to winter & woe.
